One of our highlights last year was visiting Year 6 at East Wickham Primary School at the time of Remembrance. We were delighted to speak to this wonderful and enthusiastic class, share stories with them, and give them a sense of why we remember those men and women who lost their lives so long ago. The questions kept coming thick and fast … why did the First World War start? (hats off to Trustee Dave for answering that in less than a minute!)… what did the soldiers eat?… how fast does a bullet travel?… and many, many more, testing our knowledge and quick thinking! Those we couldn’t answer we asked them to research and we hope we sparked an interest in the First World War, and an understanding of the importance of peace.
Staff at the school fed back: “We have had an amazing afternoon!!! They were honestly the nicest people and so much knowledge between them! The children absolutely loved looking at and examining the artifacts. I could have honestly sat and listened to them speak all day, I think the children could have too! We had some really insightful questions and I think our visitors were impressed.”
We’re sure you will agree that the children who acted as Tommy the soldier, and Edith the nurse, looked wonderful.
