For those interested in taking part in researching the First World War locally, or recording your own relative’s story, you may like to participate in one of two local Heritage Lottery funded projects.
The Greenwich Heritage Centre will be launching their Family Stories of the Great War: Family Histories from War Memorials project on Thursday 13th March 2014 6pm – 9pm at their centre, located at the Royal Artillery site in Woolwich. You will be able to learn about their project, meet museum staff, listen to guest speakers from the War Memorials Trust and Firepower Museum and hear about other World War I Centenary events in Royal Greenwich in 2014. The Woolwich Singers will provide entertainment, Hopstuff, a local brewery, will be launching a new beer and refreshments will be available. The event is free to attend.
Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice and Age Exchange will be jointly running a Children of the Great War Open Day on Wednesday 9th April at 11.00 am – 4.00pm at Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice. If you have a relative who fought in The Great War, served in the Ambulance Corps, in Munitions, or experienced the War on the Home Front, they invite you to take your stories to contribute to Age Exchange’s Children of the Great War project. An expert team of interviewers and digital archivists from Age Exchange will record your story and photograph your memorabilia, letters, photographs and other artefacts. Age Exchange will be submitting the family stories to the Europeana 1914-18 international online archive, creating exhibitions and a new play, to be premiered in London in August 2014.
